Kazakhstani people paid exorbitant fares for hundreds of services

Almaty. March 17. KazTAG –Kazakhstani people paid exorbitant fares for hundreds of services, said Rustam Akhmetov, First Deputy Chairman of the Agency for the Protection and Development of Competition.
“We conducted an analysis and identified about 600 such services that were removed from the sphere of natural monopolies. (…) On the other side were the interests of the consumer, who are forced to pay for these services at inflated prices. We see that the price of these services, if taken annually, has increased by about two to three times,” Akhmetov said at the presentation of the draft law on competition issues in the Majilis.
Since 2017, monopoly entities are not limited to 5% of commercial activity.
"As soon as we lifted this restriction, there was an influx of cases when natural monopoly entities, due to underfunding and tariff containment, began to split up and remove some of the work from the regulated service: repair work, connection, pressure testing. (...) The monopolist removes these services, and they are not subject to price control, although these are purely monopoly services," Akhmetov added.
