Up to 90% of jewelry items in Kazakhstan are produced and sold on black market - Majilis

Astana. October 14. KazTAG - The share of shadow turnover in the jewellery industry of Kazakhstan reaches 90%, said Daniya Espayeva, Mailis deputy from the Ak Zhol party.
"The share of the shadow turnover in the jewellery industry reaches 90%, including not only the products but also the associated turnover of precious metals and stones," she said.
She referred to statistics which showed that jewellery worth $ 81.5 million was imported to Kazakhstan in 2017-2018, while according to the Turkish Association of Jewelry Importers, only from Turkey and in 2017 alone, items worth $ 267 million were delivered to Kazakhstan.
One of the reasons for the shadow jewellery market is the introduction of VAT on the purchase of refined gold in 2018, which resulted in a drop in the legal turnover of precious metals. In 2017 jewellers purchased 30 kg of gold from Tau Ken Altyn LLP gold,  in 2020 - only 12.5 kg.
