Shutdown of eight colonies saved 12 bn tenge in Kazakhstan

Astana. April 20. KazTAG - Shutdown of 8 colonies has saved 12 bn tenge, said Oksana Loskutova, official representative of the General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan.
"Kazakhstan has climbed from the third to 73rd place in the international index of jailed population being ahead of the US and a number of EU states, such as Israel, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Singapore, Baltic states. It helped to shutdown 8 colonies and save 12 bn tenge of budget funds," she said at the press-conference "On observance of criminal-executive legislation in correctional institutions".
The surveillance bodies have checked all the 86 correctional institutions functioning in Kazakhstan, including 17 pre-trial detention facilities.
"In general the complex measures for reduction of imprisoned population in the years of independence helped to lower their number from 100 000 to 35 000," she said.
