"According to paragraph 3 of Article 8 of the law - the authorized body for the return of assets and members of the commission on the return of illegally acquired assets to the state are obliged to ensure the safety and confidentiality of the information received. “Detailed information about the work being carried out, by decision of the commission, is classified as information of limited distribution,” the committee reported in response to a request from the editorial board of KazTAG about Kulibayev’s negotiations with the state on the payment of $1 billion.
Bloomberg had reported that Kulibayev was negotiating with the Kazakh authorities on the payment of about $1 billion to the state as part of an investigation into the origin of his wealth accumulated under Nazarbayev. It was noted that the deal, if concluded, does not imply admission of guilt and includes payments and investments. The publication noted that the agreement could help Kazakhstan regain investor confidence.
Oligarch Timur Kulibayev is one of the richest people on the planet and the second-richest person in Kazakhstan – his total assets in 2024 were estimated at $5 billion.
