“We believe that US duties are contrary to the WTO rules. Therefore, together with the EU and many others, we have requested the WTO to create an arbitration commission on American duties, " said Ina Eriksen Sereide, Norwegian Foreign Minister cited by the Norwegian Telegraph Bureau.
In her words, this issue is of fundamental importance, since Norway, being a country with an open economy, strongly depends on respect for the principles of multilateralism.
In turn, the United States appealed to the WTO asking the arbitration group to consider the situation with the use of protectionist measures by a number of countries in response to the imposition of duties on steel and aluminum by the United States.
"The United States on Thursday asked the organization's expert group to examine the duties of the EU, Canada, China and Mexico, which, after the introduction of US import duties of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, came up with a similar step regarding imports from the United States", reports Reuters with a reference to an unnamed representative of the US authorities.
