Japanese confirm findings on NPP construction in Kazakhstan

Almaty. August 28. KazTAG — The findings on the nuclear power plant (NPP) have been confirmed by a consortium of Japanese companies, said Timur Zhantikin, Director General of Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants JSC.
“Since 2018, we have conducted a study taking into account climatic factors, the characteristics of the power system and the projected electricity deficit. Conclusions: the recommended capacity of one unit is up to 1.4 GW, the total capacity of a two-unit station reaches 2.8 GW. The recommended area for the NPP is the area of Lake Balkhash near the village of Ulken. All our findings have been confirmed by a consortium of Japanese companies,” Zhantikin said at a government meeting.
The optimal technology recommended for the construction of NPPs in Kazakhstan is 3.3+ generation water-cooled reactors, which have a high level of safety and improved economic indicators.
"The probability of emergency situations occurring at modern reactors is low. The safety system neutralizes its possible consequences," he added.
