Astana resident sentenced to three years for false bomb threat and brawl aboard a plane

Astana. February 21. KazTAG – The Astana Interdistrict Criminal Court sentenced a city resident to three years in prison for knowingly making a false bomb threat and brawl on board an aircraft, reported the capital’s court press service.
“On February 20, 2025, the Astana Interdistrict Criminal Court sentenced the defendant for knowingly making a false bomb threat (Article 273 of the Criminal Code) and hooliganism committed on board an aircraft (Clause 4, Part 2, Article 293) of the Criminal Code. (…) By the court's verdict, taking into account the circumstances of the offenses committed, the presence of an aggravating circumstance, the defendant was found guilty, and for the totality of criminal offenses was sentenced to three years in prison,” reads the report.
According to the court's materials, the man was on board a FlyArystan plane flying from Astana to Ust-Kamenogorsk. He grossly violated public order, expressing obvious disrespect for others. After hitting a flight attendant and a passenger, he reported an explosive device on board. This led to an emergency evacuation of 153 passengers and a repeated inspection, which entailed material costs for the airline and law enforcement agencies.
When passing the sentence, the court took into account the presence of a minor child and his repentance as mitigating circumstances, and recognized the state of alcohol intoxication as an aggravating factor.
