8% of 37 000 convicts are serving sentences for drug-related crimes

Astana. September 18. KazTAG – 8% of more than 37,000 convicts are serving sentences for drug-related crimes, said Majilis deputy Ruslan Berdenov.
“Today, 8% of more than 37,000 convicts are serving sentences for drug-related crimes,” Berdenov said, voicing a deputy’s request to the government, at a plenary session of the Majilis.
In his words,  3,145 people committed drug-related crimes, of which 2,560 were convicted. In Kazakhstan, more than 18,000 people are registered as drug addicts.
While in 2023 more than 1 million grams of drugs were seized in the country,  over the eight months of 2024 this figure reached 900 thousand grams.
"There is an opinion that underground drug labs are working intensively in the regions of the country and are protected by various agencies. It is necessary to organize inspection work," Berdenov said.
