Astana. December 5. KazTAG - The number of cases of torture in jails has significantly decreased: from 24 cases last year to 5 this year. 17 people have been convicted in cases of torture in colonies, said Berik Asylov ,Prosecutor General.
"The preventive effect of this work is visible. This year, the registration of cases of torture in jails has significantly decreased - from 24 to 5 cases, 17 people have been convicted of torture in colonies," Asylov said in an interview on the eve of the Prosecutor's Day.
The Prosecutor General said that a set of preventive measures is being implemented in the penitentiary system. Duty prosecutors visit jails daily, including unannounced night checks. The practice of anonymously surveying convicts has been introduced, and about 40,000 video cameras have been installed for continuous surveillance. Prosecutors remotely monitor the situation in 78 institutions.
The number of terminals for submitting electronic requests has also doubled - there are now 612 of them. The terminals are located in common areas, including canteens and detachments.
“We take a tough stance on torture. Particular attention is paid to preventing torture in the penitentiary system. Any signal from convicts about cruel treatment is considered through the prism of torture,” the Prosecutor General added.
